A tachyon is any particle that travels at superluminal velocity (faster than light).

Many strange properties have been attributed to tachyons. In the language of the theory of special relativity, a tachyon is a particle with space-like four-momentum. A tachyon is constrained to the space-like portion of the energy-momentum graph. Therefore, it can never slow to light speed or below. Curiously, as its energy decreases, its velocity increases.

Forms of tachyonic matter include imaginary matter.
