The term Battle Group is often used in the GA Fleet movement terminology, to refer to a group of about 3-20 ships that complement each other in a task. By keeping the ships in each group standard, it is easier to manage forces.

These groups of ships, referred to as "battle groups" are usually assigned to patrol and maintain various tasks together during peace time, but they can be called to form bigger fleets in times of conflict. Usually these battle groups are assigned with a lead ship that relays orders from the fleet command to the other ships, but sometimes the captains along with their ships are just assigned to different battle groups and can be moved to other duties if the need arises.
