This is the afterglow of the Big Bang and the hot early universe, also known as the Cosmic Microwave Background. The glow is now so greatly red-shifted that it appears not as light, but as microwaves (radio waves with a wavelength of a few centimeters) with a temperature of 2.7 degrees K.
