An old and crude power plant, fission reactors get their energy from a nuclear reaction in which a heavy nucleus splits into two lighter nuclei (see nuclear fission). Fission reactors require heavy enriched materials as fuel, and produce tons of radioactive waste material, which is why most modern civilizations have phased them out. It is not uncommon to see fission reactors on older personally owned and/ or custom short range ships, however, or in emergency power systems.
