Instrumentality class stations were mostly built for planetary traffic control and general planetary administration, and are common all over the Delta Quadrant. They have a large array of docking bays located in the middle of the station, designed to be able to service and refuel many ships simultaneously.
An Instrumentality Station isn't very good in combat situations, as its defense grid is by default designed only to protect the docking bays. Some have been modified with further weapons to act as orbital defense platforms, however.
All Instrumentality class stations were equipped with an advanced sentient mainframe computer.
