Life Support is the mechanical means to generate a livable atmosphere on a starship or a space station. It includes atmospheric recycling and generation, temperature regulation, filtering, and humidity controls. Advanced life support systems may include bio-filters that remove threat substances.

In addition to atmospherics, life support systems may also include secondary, non-critical systems such as plumbing and sewage handling, as well as food production through replicators, hydroponics bays or other means.

For sleeper ships, hibernation chambers may also be considered part of life support, although this definition is archaic with modern methods of space travel.
