Red giant
From Peace Station Encyclopedia
(Redirected from Red giants)
Jump to navigationJump to searchA red giant is a relatively old star whose
diameter is about 100 times bigger than it
was originally, and has become cooler. They
are frequently orange in color. The red
giant phase is common in the evolution of
many less massive stars. When core hydrogen
is exhausted, gravitational collapse
ignites hydrogen shell burning outside the
core. The star's envelope expands far
beyond the photosphere limit.
