Battle of the Gigerdi System

The Battle of the Gigerdi system took place in the Gigerdian home system shortly before the end of the Lightness War. The true reasons for this seemingly fluke attack is still debated today.

Sneak attack ?

At the time that the battle took place, the GA was stretched to the limit due to increased offensives by the seemingly unstoppable forces of the Great Lightness. Naturally, even battle groups from Gigerdi Prime had to formed into bigger fleets and sent to other quadrants for defensive actions, which in turn weakened Gigerdi Prime's defences somewhat. The strategic planners, however, believed that such decisions would be safe enough due to that fact that at the time it was believed that the Lightness did not know the exact location of the GA's home world.

When the battles in the galactic fronts had slowed down abit, the GA planners thought that the Lightness forces in all quadrants had possibly retreated back to resupply and repair their battered fleets. At the time of the battle only the 7th and 14th fleets of the Gigerdi Alliance were located in the Gigerdi system, but the lull in the fighting convinced the admirals to move them to the Beta Quadrant, which required extensive assistance overall.

The only forces on-site were the 212st battle group "Home Shield", 500th battle group "Alliance Guard" and the 89th battle group "Viper". All of these battle groups were local units, which meant that they were all a part of GACDF forces of the Gigerdi system. These battle groups had roughly 50 ships under their command, and their condition varied greatly. Some of them were new, and some of them were older vessels being repaired or refitted for new war-time tasks.

Shadows in The Horizon

A few days after a lull in the fighting several patrol ships, listening posts, external sensors and finally even recon flights reported jump trails of some sort near the planet Groger in the Gigerdi system. Recon flights were able to confirm that a small group of ships of unidentified origin had just jumped into the system, and they had sent smaller drones to scout around the upper atmosphere of Groger. The forces located in Groger quickly confirmed that they had successfully destroyed a pair of Lightness fighter drones with surface-based weapon systems. Sensors then reported that there was almost a dozen medium- to large-sized capital ships converging around Groger. This caused wide-spread panic among the GA ranks in the system.

The GA commanders on-site immediately called for the mass mobilization of all the fleet assets in the system. The Lightness forces seemed to be somewhat confused and lost in the system, and thus several of the smaller capital ships in the scout fleet were successfully ambushed and destroyed by combined efforts between the local forces of the system and the GA military fleets.

Conclusion

The Gigerdian plan was to slow the Lightness advance up until additional fleet assets could be called into combat. What made the situation difficult was, that most of the GA forces weren't near the home system, and thus bringing in reinforcements was hard.

The GA forces destroyed an additional pair of Lightness vessels during their relentless advance towards the main planets of the system. It was then decided by the GA commanders, that the Lightness fleet would be lured near the presence of one of the defensive stations in the orbit of Gigerdii. The 212st battle group "Home Shield" was selected as bait, and they were to act as a decoy. All of the vessels in this battle group were ultimately destroyed while they attempted to lure the Lightness vessels into the vicinity of the station.

By the time the Lightness vessels realized that they were in the aiming reticules of the massive weapon systems of the station orbiting Gigerdii, it was too late. The local forces in the area used a hasty tactic of ramming large cargo haulers with their reactors wired into a critical state against the Lightness forces. Ultimately the Lightness forces were destroyed completely and the advance towards Gigerdi Prime was halted.
