The CBU project, or simply The Project, was started by the higher echelons of HFed government some time after the Peace Station Era to ensure that even in the unlikely event of a force greater than the Federation somehow managing to destroy the Collective, it would not be the end of the Hemmoian civilization.

A single CBU is a dark grey sphere, 5 kilometers in diameter. It has a perpetual quantum singularity power source and a heavy-duty nanotech replicator / recycler for converting large planetary masses to programmable nano-matter, which can be later used to replicate equipment, colonies, support craft, crewmembers, and other required assets.

Each Hemmoian Federation Collective BackUp unit has an FTL jump capability, a cloaking device which is online at all times, four landing bays (two of them empty and two filled with several squadrons of Hemmoian Attack Drone MKIIIs), four different Artificial Intelligences and four organic brains that control the unit, 24 x 24 torpedo bays, 24 x 24 heavy particle disruptors, 24 tractor beam projectors, 24 EMP disabling units and two Black Hole Generators. Online units also have four Subspace Relays, for communicating with the rest of the Collective.

The Units, 24 in total, are spread around the Galaxy, hidden in the strangest of places, and their locations are one of most guarded secrets of the Hemmoian Government.

Despite the high security involved, during the Hemmoian Revolution rebel forces were somehow able to hijack CBU unit 8, transforming it into a mobile base of operations. This was one of the Federation's greatest single losses in the Hemmoian Civil War, as not only did the rebels gain valuable information from the dataship's computer banks, they could also build thousands of warships with the onboard replicators - not to mention the fact that the station's cloak made it nearly impossible to find.
