The Siege of Unity City was a prolonged planetary battle that took place in and around Unity City, the capital of Tooled Hemmo I during the Hemmoian Civil War. It was fought between Hemmoian Federation loyalists and Rebellion guerrillas with heavy civilian casualties for 32 rotations.

Outbreak of the Rebellion

While the planetary administrations of Tooled Hemmo II and III defected immediately to the Rebellion's side following the Tooled Hemmo system's declaration of independence, the coup on Tooled Hemmo I failed and the world ostensibly remained loyal to the Federation. A planetwide martial law was declared by the planetary administration and IHSF blockade fleets were placed in orbit. The situation was extremely tense but no hostilities erupted on the world until the Damogran Incident, when the planetary defense grid of Tooled Hemmo III was forced to fire upon a blockade fleet. Following this development, open rebellion flared on Tooled Hemmo I.

Although several rebel cells had existed in Unity City prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, they were unable to seize power and were quickly neutralized by the city's internal security force. Several divisions of the Hemmoian Clone Army were deployed to defend the city as well as a Heavy Mechanized armor division, who held the city with great success for over 32 rotations. Both sides took heavy casualties during this prolonged siege, and civilian deaths reached staggering numbers.

Loyalist defeat

However, as the rest of the planet was won over by rebel forces, and the Rebellion established space superiority in the Tooled Hemmo system, supply lines to the city were cut and the remaining HFed forces were forced to surrender.

Aftermath

After the brutal conflict, the city was left in ruins. Major reconstruction only began once the Civil War ended and the Democratic Hemmoian Republic was founded. The city was renamed Freedom to reflect the ideals of the newly established state.
