Primary component of the Alpha Centauri system, Alpha Centauri A has a binary companion Alpha Centauri B. The binary system has a period of 79.92 years, orbiting with a semimajor axis of 23.60 AUs. The orbit has an eccentricity of 0.516, reaching 35.78 AUs in apastron and coming as close as 11.42 AUs in periastron.

The system also has a third member, Proxima Centauri.
