Blue stragglers

Jump to navigationJump to searchBlue stragglers are enigmatic stars found in old star clusters that appear to be bluer and younger than the rest of the population. Young stars would contradict the hypothesis that all the stars in the cluster formed at nearly the same time. Blue stragglers are now thought to be due to stars coalescing, indicating a high collision and capture rate at the dense center of the cluster.
