Cats, also known as the subspecies Felinae, are a furry mammal hailing from the planet Earth. They are lithe creatures, capable of running at high speeds and making precise leaps of incredible lengths. Each of their four paws contain an array of very sharp claws and they are capable of delivering lethal bites to small prey animals with their impressive, scissor-like fangs. They are primarily nocturnal animals.

Cats have been spread all over the galaxy by Human colonists and explorers as pets, and are known in both the Delta and Alpha Quadrants by the Hemmoians and the Gigerdians. Several Hemmoians have been known of being particularly fond of them, including the HFed ambassador to the Peace Station, Shok 24 Teenik, who wrote multiple research papers on the subject, including The Behaviour of Cats in Low-Gravity Environments.

A story also circulates in the Alpha Quadrant of an early spacefaring group of aliens, probably humans, who were said to have assumed the likeness of cats and behaved in a catlike fashion. This group was led by the elusive "Kollipää", but has long since disappeared into the mists of time and has not yet been verified by historians.
