The Mizar system is a double binary, or quadruple star system. The system has two primary components, A and B, which lie some 345 to 500 AU apart and take around 5,000 years to complete one mutual circuit. However, each of the two stars have a binary companion of their own.

Another nearby star around three light years away, Alcor, has a similar proper motion but is probably outside the gravitational influence of this system.
