Mizar (also known as Zeta Ursae Majoris) is the primary component of the Mizar system. The name comes from the human ميزر mīzar, meaning a waistband or girdle.
Mizar has a close spectroscopic binary partner, Mizar Ab, as well as a more distant partner 345 - 500 AUs away, known as Mizar B. This star also has a partner of its own, Mizar Bb. The stars form a quadruple gravitationally bound system.
The components are all members of the Ursa Major moving group, a mostly dispersed group of stars sharing a common birth, as determined by proper motion.
