Hazard Warning Beacons can be placed by civilian militias to mark out trade routes in dangerous sectors. They emit subspace signals that show safe trade lanes between stations and planets. By flying close to these beacons you can be assured of a safe flight, although pirates sometimes use these trade routes as target practice.
