Photoelectrochemical cell
From Peace Station Encyclopedia
Jump to navigationJump to searchGeneric term for a wide range of cheap and easily fabricated, flexible photovoltaic device based on nanocrystalline materials and conducting polymer films, photoelectrochemical cells provide a very high efficiency ratio of conversion of sunlight to electrical power. Widely used in many space habitats and for ground-based planetary power production for remote habitats and instruments.
Extendible solar panels can also provide backup power for a spacecraft's power plants. They are sometimes installed in scout or mining ships, giving them greater range and endurance.
A ship equipped with solar panels consumes power plant fuel at one–quarter the normal rate as long as it is only engaged in minimal manoeuvring and does not fire weapons.
