Private Eye

The Private Eye is typically an average citizen, who owns a small apartment and leads a normal life. He moves from job to job and doesn't consider performing courier services for the local companies beneath him.

Whether they work for a large professional security firm or out of a one-room office in a rotting old brownstone, their job is to find out things that other people want to keep hidden. They can dig through datafiles and question people in order to find information they may need for their job.

They don't have the backup available to regular police forces, and they don't have any real authority (unless deputized, which happens on some worlds) - so they've got to live by their wits, and go with their hunches.

Maybe their loyalty is to their client, maybe to their partners, maybe to the money; or maybe they actually care about justice. It's not a job guaranteed to give you the most positive view of life, so each case has a tendency to make the private investigator a little more tired, a little more discouraged, and maybe a little more careless ...

Many PI's are ex-cops, ex-gangsters, or both. However, they also have the potential of becoming a bounty hunter, a playboy, or even a career criminal.
