The Ring Nebula (M57) is a ring shaped planetary nebula 1.7 light years across. It is composed of ejecta from a star that erupted around 4000 years ago, currently expanding at a rate of 70 000 kilometers per standard hour. Today, only a white dwarf remains at the center of the nebula.

It is estimated that the nebula will continue expanding for the next 10 000 years, eventually fading and merging into the interstellar medium.
