SDSS J010657.39-100003.3 system

Jump to navigationJump to searchA binary pair of white dwarfs, the two components of the SDSS J010657.39-100003.3 system orbit at a very close distance. Despite their proximity, the stars have not begun exchanging surface materials.
The couple is losing gravitational energy with each 39 standard minute orbit. They are predicted to merge within the next 37 million years. Consisting mostly of helium, the two stars will ignite a new, very hot blue subdwarf star. The new star will fuse the helium into carbon and oxygen in its core.
