does anyone remember where these things came from? I distinctly remember hearing about them though.

I remember them too. Apparently a large "Megaworm" had been sleeping deep under the surface of Bacterius and was awakened due to some seismic activity after the creation of the Inter-Stellar Alliance. The ensuing situation saw the huge worm wake up and wreak havoc to a nearby city.

The ISA forces had to use atmospheric fighters etc. stuff to kill it. The thing had immensily tough "skin" , for the lack of a better term.

And as far as what I've heard , the Megaworm(s) was indigenous to Bacterius - It wasn't a Bio-weapon.
