Baasegnar Drive
The Baasegnar Drive was a prototype interdimensional drive system designed for intergalactic travel. Designed by Hemmoian scientist Arnasuk Baasegnar, the ultraheavy drive was assembled in the L1 orbit of Tamoyl, an otherwise uninhabited world in the Toreed system.
The Drive is famous for eventually ending up as the primary FTL drive of the UOSF HemmoCruiser III on its ill-fated journey beyond the Galactic plane.
Technology
Essentially a massively scaled up version of a standard PlasmaBall Dimensional PropSys (PBDPS), the drive assembly was the largest ever created by the United Orcs, reaching a length of 20 kilometers. It was also characterized as a Gateway Device capable of self-transportation.
The main component was an experimental linear exotic particle acceleration loop capable of reaching never before achieved energy states. Utilizing the Underspace effect, the drive was capable of breaking through the subspatial boundary and reaching the Portal dimension, allowing for FTL travel through previously uncharted dimensional passageways.
The assembly included a minimal living space (the "Personnel Module") for a science team located at the middle, but had no proper bridge like a complete starship. A secondary Science Module at the base of the Tachyon Shunt allowed for observations and fine-tuning of the drive mechanisms, as well as the control of rudimentary maneuvering thrusters designed to prevent orbit decay.
History
The prototype was still at its development phase when the First Bacterian War broke out and a general evacuation was broadcast system-wide. The drive system was first tested when Arnasuk Baasegnar xerself piloted it out of the Toreed system, towards the edge of known space.
Although the operation was very risky, Baasegnar was able to navigate the fractal chaos of the Portal dimension and eventually reach the Refuge, where the UO government in exile was gathering at a former mining outpost.
Eventually, the Baasegnar Drive became the primary FTL drive system of the massive HemmoCruiser III, a colony vessel capable of accommodating millions, designed to escape beyond the main galactic plane. The giant ship was built in orbit of the Refuge by installing one part a time around the drive assembly.
When the giant craft was incapacitated during the HemmoCruiser Incident, the Drive was destroyed with it, its acceleration coils broken and overloaded. It would take decades before anything like it would be constructed again, but the scientific data extracted from its few performed jumps alone was invaluable in furthering the understanding of extradimensional physics.
