The HD-Wing Heavy Attack Starfighter was never widely deployed. They were designed and built shortly before the First Bacterian War to replace the aging H-Wing starfighters, and like their predecessors, they were multipurpose vessels with a secondary mission profile as bombers. When they were new, they were considered Heavy Starfighters, but the designation helped little against the technologically superior Bacterian forces.

For life support, the HD-Wings utilized a new genetically engineered contained bacterial strain, which created methane as a natural by-product. That way, the HD-wings never ran out of fresh breathing methane.

Two squadrons of the fighters served in the Battle of the Refuge.
