Battle of the Refuge

The Battle of the Refuge was a brief defensive battle in orbit of The Refuge during the final stages of the First Bacterian War. It occured between the Bacterian assault fleet Holy Fire and the defensive flotilla of the recently finished UOSF HemmoCruiser III, consisting of whatever spacecraft were still functional in orbit around The Refuge.

The Bacterian assault fleet, consisting of the BES Darkened Sea, BES Emperor's Command, BES Imprekator, and the BES Melkirth, jumped into the Refuge system just as the HemmoCruiser III had finished construction. The Baasegnar Drive of the HemmoCruiser III was immediately powered up for a jump, but its experimental linear particle acceleration loop took time to reach the required energy states.

The HemmoCruiser III also had eight fighter bays, but only 25 HD Wing class Starfighters were aboard. They were launched to engage the Bacterian assault fleet.

As the battle began, the armored freighter IRSS Homeland Courier, commandeered by Paavo the Berserk, jumped in orbit. Realizing the freighter had no chance against the Bacterian fleet, Paavo the Berserk, Ovaap Resrek and the Overhemmo escaped the ship on captured starfighters, flying directly into the HemmoCruiser's docking bays.

None of the UO fighter wings made it back, but had bought just enough time for the HC-III to escape.

Of the Bacterian fleet that entered the system, only one capital ship was damaged. The BES Darkened Sea suffered catastrophic damage when the heavy assault carrier UOSF Peredel Vanguard, commanded by Col. Herenis Trygg, performed a jumpspace maneuver inside the Bacterian vessel's hull and detonated its remaining nuclear missiles.
