Alpha Arae

An active hot type Be star, Alpha Arae is rotating with a velocity close to its break-up velocity and loses mass through a stellar wind emerging predominantly from the poles and reaching velocities of the order of 2000 km/s. The star is surrounded by a disc of matter that rotates non-uniformly around the star, similar to a planetary system.
The star rotates around completely in about half a day, with a speed at the equator of 470 km/s.
