Commander (GA)

The rank of Commander is a rank above Lieutenant-Commander and below Captain in the GA Military. The rank of Commander is the fourth highest of the so-called "commanding officer ranks".

Service members with the rank of Commander act as either executive or commanding officers aboard the starship. Quite often the holder of this rank has been qualified to command a single starship, but unlike the rank of Captain, cannot lead a Battle Group of vessels. Commanders are also quite often the 2nd-in-command of a starship.

Commanders are also known to be in command of various smaller orbital outposts - such as refueling and supply depots. Commanders can also be the commanding officers aboard military transports and smaller capital ships - but never large cruisers and almost certainly very rarely even destroyers.
