Magnetar
From Peace Station Encyclopedia
Jump to navigationJump to searchA type of short-lived neutron star with a super-strong magnetic field a thousand trillion times stronger than that of a standard planet. The magnetic field actually slows the star's rotation and causes starquakes that pump enough energy into the surrounding gases to generate bursts of soft gamma radiation.
Individual particles inside the magnetar's crust are stretched one hundred times longer than usual.
