The second part of most atomic nuclei and one of the three main components of an atom. It is positively electrically charged with a charge equal and opposite that of the electron. The other part is a neutron, which is neutral in charge and has a mass similar to the proton (1.007276 daltons, or 1.6726 = 10-27 kg).

The proton is known to consist of point-like particles called quarks, bound together by gluons.
