Kapu is the former leader of the unified pirate clans of the Black Cauldron pirates, Deltarr pirates and various smaller groups. He is regarded as the only pirate leader who has attempted a unification of various pirate clans to a single union. Kapu was also the only pirate leader who could officially be called the "statesman" of an independent pirate empire that had been recognized by a single major starpower.

Kapu's origins are unknown; some theories have suggested that he was actually an alien of some sort who just wore a suit resembling a human. First contact with Kapu was made at the end of the Timocracy war during the Peace Station's final year as a functioning diplomatic entity. The GA established formal relations with Kapu since he vowed for a peaceful unification of the various pirate groups that had been terrorizing the Alpha and Beta quadrants before. He wanted to mold the clans together and set-up a "trade organization spanning through all quadrants". Kapu even committed a small armada of ships to assist the GA forces during the Gigerdian-Bacterian war (third Bacterian war).

At first Kapu seemed to fulfill his promises but as President Rubek rose to power Kapu's empire was promoted to a status of full time ally. President Rubek appointed Kapu as the governor of Bacterian territories and placed three Bacterian systems under Kapu's direct command. These systems became Kapu's control worlds where he used slave labor to build his medium-sized military assests. Kapu's forces also constituted 70 % of the occupational forces of Bacterius since Rubek was somewhat unwilling to commit GA forces to Bacterius; thus Bacterius became a world almost single-handedly ruled by Kapu's henchmen. Kapu was also known to build glamorous palaces around his territories and mock the Hemmoians by attempting to clone a well known Hemmoian/Orcish reporter.

With his new resources and vast amounts of labor Kapu quickly proceeded to construct several icons of his might; one of these was the gigantic battlestation known as Death Kapu. Kapu's forces also fought against the renegade faction of GA forces led by Nix Balmorra but usually lost horribly. During this period Kapu also recorded and released a collection of seaman songs that subsequently went gold in many Gigerdian systems.

When President Rubek committed suicide and news of Nix's promise to the Bacterians spread around a popular uprising started by the slaves and Kapu's own citizens commenced. Kapu was killed in this uprising by his own henchmen and a handful of his citizens. The resulting situation saw Kapu's pirate empire fall apart into the same splintered pirate factions fleeing to the Gamma and Delta quadrants.

Notes on the term "Kapu"

After the original Kapu had been killed the title of "Kapu" became a synonyme for the leader of certain pirate clans. The galactic community has seen several pirate leaders claiming the honorary title of Kapu during the years following the fall of the initial Kapu empire. The battle for the rightful heir to the throne is still commencing at a very low level, however.

The Inter-planetary alliance has been instrumental in the destruction of various Kapu's former henchmen such as Kapu Kalma, Kapu Kuolema, Kapu Katku, Kapu Kakka and Kapu Korjaaja, as well as Kapu Kauhu.
