Linguist
A linguist is an expert in the study of languages.
With the myriads of languages that are found throughout the Galaxy, linguistics is a popular field, and the good linguist is always in demand. Most linguists are augmented with extensive xenolinguistics databases that enable them to easily and quickly learn and understand new languages and dialects which, in a volume of space the size of the Milky Way Galaxy, tend to develop at a rate that makes learning each language individually impossible.
A linguist understands and is highly knowledgeable in not only grammar, phonology, and deep structures, the development of language skills in children, animals, and artificial constructs, but also history, categorization, standardization, and comparison of dialects and languages. Most linguists tend to specialize in a particular language family or the linguistics of a particular civilization or area of space.
Among the tools of linguists are universal translators, the databases of which they constantly seek to improve, as well as purpose built robots designed to act as interpreters for languages they cannot readily communicate in due to lack of some communications facility (such as incompatible vocal cords.)
